Texas.... A.D. 1534

The summer days were hot in 1534 in what is now southern Texas, Alvar Nunez Cabeza de Vaca crouched over a young man with a serious chest wound. For the past six years, de Vaca, a high ranking Spanish official, had been the captive of Gulf Coast Karankawas Indians.

-Although de Vaca possessed no medical degree, he might be called the first white physician ever to practice in Texas. He had come to America in 1528 to serve as treasurer of Panfilo de Narvaez's Florida expedition.

For reasons not entirely known today, de Vaca's captors assumed he was a competent medicine man. He realized that he did sometimes have luck curing various maladies of the native population, so he wisely took advantage of his healing skills. He soon discovered that he could obtain special favors from the Indians if he carefully acted out the role of medicine man. Some trubesmen came to revere him highly, although he was still considered a prisoner.
